How Dog-friendly is the Lake District?

Well, where do we start, home to the most dog-friendly town in the UK; Keswick, the lake district is a paradise for both dogs and their owners.

You might think that is because of the miles of countryside walks and in part it is, but this spectacular corner of North West England has much more to offer.

Divine beaches and pretty fishing villages dot the coastline with many a dog-friendly pub. Many of the attractions cater to our four-legged friends and best of all there are tons of activities where you can spend quality time together.

Dog-friendly Lake District Attractions

  • location-arrow
    Ullswater Steamers
You can bring along your pooch on one of these fantastic Steamboat cruises for just £1 as long as they are kept on a lead and it is a terrific way to spend a relaxing afternoon together perhaps after a walk along the surrounding Ullswater Way.
  • Brantwood Gardens
If you want to spend time somewhere peaceful, there’s nowhere better than the gardens at Brantwood. While not permitted in the museum itself, dogs on leads are more than welcome in the grounds and at the charming café. You can buy a ticket just for the gardens and dogs go free.
  • The Puzzling Place, Keswick
Kids and adults alike will enjoy The Puzzling Place in Keswick, while we’re not quite sure what your canine pal will make of the mind-boggling puzzles they can certainly accompany you for free, around this fascinating attraction.
  • Lakeland Miniature Village
Home to over 100 miniature buildings and a popular tourist attraction Lakeland Miniature Village can be found in Flookburgh, close to Cartmel. Dogs on leads are allowed but make sure they don’t trample on the teeny tiny people.
  • The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway
Dog are welcome on this vintage steam train for a small charge and there is water provided at the stations at both ends of the 7-mile journey, they are also allowed into the Fellbites Café at Dalegarth-for-Boot station. There are some fantastic walks on-route if you want to hop off and stretch your legs at one of the stops.
  • Brockhole Visitor Centre
Brockhole offers lots to do for the whole family and is a must for families enjoying a Lake District break. Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds, shop, exhibition area, main café and terrace but are not permitted in the play areas, treetop adventure areas (sorry no doggie zip wires) and the restaurant.
  • Old Hall Farm, Bouth, Ulverston
You and your canine companion can step back in time when you visit this historic working farm near Ulverston. Of course, as there are farm animals around and Fido must be kept on a short lead but there is a lovely undercover seating area outside the café where you can enjoy a cuppa or bite to eat together.

Luxury self-catering in the Lake District – Dog-friendly pubs and places to eat

  • The Royal Oak – This 18th century lodge in the heart of Keswick, boasts one of the best restaurants in the town, serving up delicious meals made from locally sourced ingredients. Your four-legged friend is more than welcome and can enjoy a bowl of water, while you tuck in.
  • Lucy’s on a Plate – This lovely informal restaurant in Ambleside has an area set aside for dogs but you need to book ahead and let them know as they get very busy in the evening. The sister restaurant Lucy4 across the street is too small to allow dogs but they can sit with you on the decking in the summer.
  • Little Chamonix Café – If you’re a cake lover, like me, then the Little Chamonix Café in Keswick is a must, the friendly staff, home-made cakes and relaxed atmosphere make this little gem a firm favourite and best of all it’s pooch friendly.
  • The Village Inn - Just minutes away from Lake Windermere, nestled in the heart of Bowness, this award-winning restaurant has a reputation for good food and excellent service, they have a great range of cocktails and delightful outdoor seating area.
  • The Narrowbar Café – If you are visiting Penrith with your dog, the Narrowbar Café is a terrific place to stop for a bite to eat, tuck in to the all-day day breakfast or sample the extensive lunch menu with fresh local ingredients while your canine companion munches on a treat.

Final Thoughts

The Lake District attracts millions of visitors every year and a great many of them are dog owners, why? Because this region is without doubt one of the most dog-friendly holiday destinations in the UK.

It is also the ideal place for dog walking as there are plenty of long idyllic trails to explore and national parks within driving distance.

There are dozens of pet-friendly cafés, pubs and restaurants and you and your canine companion will be spoilt for choice and he doesn’t need to miss out on fun days out either as many of the attractions in the Lake District cater for dogs.
