Our Best Dog Harnesses for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a loving and sociable dog breed; they’re ideal companion dogs and love to spend a lot of their time curled up on their owner’s lap!

When it’s time for your Cav’s daily walk, a harness is your best option. These delicate little pups are known to suffer from health conditions such as syringomyelia (which can cause excessive scratching of the neck) and rapid weight gain, so choosing a well-fitting and comfortable harness is essential for all Cavalier owners; here’s our top seven!

This Year’s Winner – rabbitgoo No-Pull Dog Harness

Our favourite harness for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, we love the two leash attachment points’ versatility, making switching between casual back clip walks and controlled front clip walks an absolute breeze!

Cavs’ overhead harness design is great, as their little legs can sometimes struggle with step-in styles. We found this especially useful for our older Cavalier, who lacks the range of movement he had as a pup!

This excellent harness features durable stitching that can easily withstand any tugs and pulls and a comfortable padded lining that helps to protect your pup’s neck from strain and prevent skin irritation during longer walks.

The 4 adjustment points and two buckles allow for a snug fit, great for Cavs that fluctuate in weight or younger pups that are still growing. We found the adjustable straps to be easy to use and very secure once we’d clipped them into place.

The limited amount of material on this sturdy harness makes it a great choice for puppies or older dogs who fidget in cumbersome restraints. The nylon webbing with breathable material lining makes it easy to wear for extended periods, a good choice for Cavs that need a little harness training.

We found the metal d rings to be very hard-wearing, easily withstanding the pulls of an excitable puppy; this was especially handy when using the front clip for no-pull training.

The control handle on the back is also an excellent feature, helping protect our pup from any dangerous environments and offering a handy method to help them navigate tricky terrain with their little legs.

One of the best budget harnesses for Cavalier King pups; we love how durable and comfortable this product is for its very affordable price point. The breathable material lining is super soft, featuring rounded edges that help to prevent skin irritation during everyday use.

We found the step in design to be handy for anxious pups or for young dogs that need a little training to get used to wearing a harness. The “magic tape” fastener on the back is also handy for achieving a snug fit and making adjustments on the go.

The two heavy-duty d rings ensure that even the most excitable Cavs won’t break free, with a combination of a hook and loop fastener and durable buckle for an added layer of security.

We think this is the best harness for Cavalier owners whose dog pulls on their lead when excited. Pulling behaviours can damage the delicate bones in your dog’s neck, so a durable front range dog harness like this is ideal for protecting them from harm.

The sturdy metal rings and fabric loops are great at withstanding tugs and pulls, with the front clip, in particular, placed low enough on the chest plate to provide great control.

We found the durable nylon exterior to be fantastic at withstanding wear. The soft padded harness lining is ideal for Cavs with long fur, as the comfortable design provides support without digging into your pup’s skin.

Should Cavalier King Charles Wear a Harness?

Cavaliers may be classed as lap dogs, but they also possess a fair amount of athleticism thanks to their Spaniel heritage.

Cavaliers can also be prone to health conditions such as syringomyelia and tracheal collapse, which cause damage to the neck and spine. This means a standard dog collar is not a good choice for these pups; a custom fit harness will be a much better option to protect their body when walking and exercising.

Different Types of Harnesses for Spaniels

Many different harnesses are available so often; the choice can be overwhelming! To find the correct harness for your Cavalier, you should consider their specific needs and each harness type’s benefits.

An anti-pull harness helps to prevent dogs from damaging their necks. Other harnesses like the Julius K9 have interchangeable hook and loop patches to display information, whilst a vest style harness that encompasses your dog’s body could make them feel more secure.

There are so many options, so let’s go over the different harness types beneficial to small dogs like the Cavalier.

No-pull harness

The front range harness is one of the best harness options to reduce pulling behaviours in excitable pups. By attaching your leash to the underside of your dog’s chest, you’ll gain much greater control over their movement, limiting their ability to pull on the leash and damage their delicate neck bones.

No pull harnesses tend to be fitted over the head, making them perfect for senior dogs and disabled Cavs, as they don’t need to move themselves to secure the harness, their owner can simply fit the device over their head and they’re ready to go!

Back clip harness

Back clip harnesses are ideal for dogs that like to run with their owner. Although Cavs don’t need too much daily exercise to stay fit, like most other dogs, they do love to run

The back clip allows them to run in step with their owner without getting tangled in their leash; it’s also useful for casual walks for this reason. A Back clip harness type is usually designed to allow your dog to step in, which is great for anxious Cavs and young pups that aren’t yet used to wearing a harness as they’ll feel more in control of the process.

Lift harness

Older Cavs will often experience trouble with their hind legs as they age, as their small stature can result in bone and muscle weakness.

For pups with limited mobility in their rear, lift harnesses can be a great tool and the best harness to redistribute their weight to the front legs, allowing them to continue enjoying their daily walks.

What to Look for in a Good Harness for King Charles Spaniels

A harness is only useful to your dog if it fits well, so look for harnesses with multiple points of adjustment across the chest and belly straps to provide optimal comfort and safety.

Cavaliers are known to have a tendency to overeat; this can result in their weight fluctuating drastically throughout their lives.

Whilst it’s essential to keep an eye on any weight gain and limit it as much as possible, it’s also a good idea to choose an adjustable harness that can adapt to any changes.

Pulling behaviour

Sociable and friendly dogs like the Cavalier can often exhibit pulling behaviours, especially when their hunting instincts kick in with every passing squirrel! Look for a no-pull harness with 2 attachment points, one on the chest strap and one on the back.

A no-pull harness will prevent your pup from pulling on their lead and is especially useful for rescue dogs or those without good leash manners

Great design

Poorly designed harnesses can cause several issues in Cavaliers, including skin abrasions, chaffing, matted fur and muscle strain. Their long coat can easily tangle in flimsy straps, and their little legs can get caught in poorly designed openings.

Look for a dog harness with multiple adjustment points, reflective stitching for nighttime walks and wide straps. This way, their fur and skin will be protected and you can ensure a snug and comfortable fit around your dog’s body.

Weight distribution

As a small dog, Cavaliers suffer from a few health conditions related to their delicate bone structure. Alongside the risk of tracheal collapse, they can develop syringomyelia and spinal problems, making walking and exercising increasingly tricky.

To minimise the risk of these conditions, you should look for harnesses that equally distribute weight across your Cav’s body, with comfortable padding and plenty of adjustable straps.

Control handles

Although Cavaliers love to explore the great outdoors, their little legs can often leave them struggling to navigate tricky environments.

A dog harness with a good quality control handle will allow you to lift your dog safely and can also come in handy around larger dogs to help your energetic Cavalier remain stress-free.

What Size Harness for Your Cavalier?

Why it’s essential to measure your Spaniel

An ill-fitting harness can be damaging to your pup’s health. Loose straps can cause skin abrasions and irritation, whilst harnesses that are too tight can damage their rib cage and shoulder blades, causing injury and discomfort.

Measuring your Spaniel is simple and will keep your dog safe when they’re enjoying the great outdoors. Just grab a flexible tape measure, and get an accurate measurement of the widest parts of their neck and chest.

Measuring their neck

Find the widest point of your dog’s neck and measure the circumference with a flexible tape measure. Jot down the measurement and remember to account for around two fingers of wriggle room.

Chest circumference

Wrap your tape measure around the largest part of the chest, mark the point and record the measurement, again, remembering to account for a little wiggle room when comparing these measurements to harness size charts!
