We researched over 50 of the top dog worming brands and found all sorts, creams, syrups, tablets for small dogs, big dogs and so on. It was exhausting!

But don’t worry, we are going to walk you through a step by step guide explaining the symptoms, doses and of course, the top tablets and treatments.

Symptoms of Worms in Dogs

It can be difficult to ascertain whether your four-legged friend has contracted worms as there are often no symptoms until the infestation is severe. To find out if your pup needs worming tablets at all. There are 4 types of intestinal worms which cause problems for canines in the UK.

It's super important to know what type of worming tablets your going to need.

tapeworm symptoms

Worming Culprit #1

Way before worming and giving any tablet, comes diagnoses. It can be difficult to ascertain whether your four-legged friend has contracted worms as there are often no symptoms until the infestation is severe. To find out if your pup needs worming at all. There are 4 types of intestinal worms which cause problems for canines in the UK.

roundworm symptoms

Worming Culprit #2

Almost all puppies need worming and suffer from roundworms at some point during their lives there are 2 types Toxocara canis and Toxascara leonine one of which can also cause problems for humans.

hookworm symptoms

Worming Culprit #3

Hookworms can cause some very serious health issues in your puppy and in some instances, can be fatal. More common abroad these nasty parasites can be found in moist wet environments like beaches and riverbanks.

A puppy or older breed can contract hookworms either by ingestion or they can also burrow through the skin. As the name implies they use suckers to hook onto the intestinal wall where they feed on the blood which can lead to anaemia. The good news is many of the worming tablets are effective against hookworms too (check the label).

whipworm symptoms

Worming Culprit #4

Whipworms are again quite common and can affect pups of any age. The eggs can survive in the environment for several years and can be contracted either by contaminated food, water or soil as well as infected faeces from other animals.

Whipworms can be extremely difficult to diagnose because it takes months for an adult to start to produce eggs and these are passed on an irregular basis so may not be picked up even when tested by a vet. Many vets will prescribe a pet suffering from chronic diarrhoea with treatment for this parasite and some of the multi-wormers available will also get rid of these dangerous parasites.

What about Lungworm?

Lungworm is becoming increasingly common in this country and can make your pet extremely ill, in fact, 9% of dogs with a heavy infestation die.

Lugworms can be contacted in one of two ways; the larvae can be found in slug and snail trails (on average there are over 20,000 of these in an average British garden)

Here we look at top dog worming medication, as well as how often do you worm a dog, the correct dosage and prevention.

Don't worry after you read this you will be a worm expert and know 100% what are the top brands, which dog tablets you should buy and more importantly which wormers stop different types of worms.

It can be daunting to know that your pride and joy might have worms and even more scary if you don't instantly know the right worming solution.

But really, worming is common and simple enough using one of the few tablets below:

So, What is best dog wormer to give?

There are a wide variety of wormers and treatments on the market. Your vet can prescribe worming pills, or for non prescription wormer you can buy them online or at pharmacies, pet shops and supermarkets.

Roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms are the most common doggy parasites in the UK and you can buy all-in-one de-wormer for your dog which effectively get rid of all three. Be sure to check the packet though to ensure it does cover them all

Be aware that 3-in-1 worming tablets, while an extremely convenient, only kill the parasites mentioned above and are not effective against lungworm or heartworm.

Always consult your vet for advice, as some over the counter medications are not suitable for heavy infestations or the de-worming of pregnant bitches and ensure you give the correct dosage.

It is advisable to use dog worming treatments 3 times a year although hunting and retrieving dogs should be de-wormed every month.

What's the Correct Dosage

When administering worm tablets getting the dosage correct is vital, this will depend on the weight of your dog which can vary depending on age and amount of exercise it does daily, so don’t guess! Worming treatments can cause side effects so it essential to get it right.

Most dog worming products come in tablet form, they are often flavoured in an attempt to make them more palatable and some pooches will snaffle them up no problem. Alternatively, if Fido is not keen, you can mix them with dry food or hide them in or small chunk of cheese. Covering them with a coating of peanut butter or cream cheese can sometimes work too.

What dog wouldn't eat that!

If you have a dog that dislikes tablets and is hard to fool, you may have to place the tablet directly into the rear of his mouth and hold shut until he swallows it down.

Worming liquids, syrups, and pastes offer an alternative and are more easily administered whilst granules can be sprinkled directly into food.

Things to consider

Always read instructions carefully as some worm tablets need to be given whole, some on an empty stomach or a specific amount of food, some are a single dose and some need to be repeated.

Here's the kicker..

It might seem obvious, but it is vital when worming to ensure your pooch has swallowed all the de-wormer and doesn’t spit it out when you’re not looking; pets can be sneaky.

Important Note

Always use lungworm tablets for canines and check that are manufactured specifically for dogs, some, such as equine worming pills can be extremely dangerous for our pets.

The best worming treatment for dogs and puppies are effective at destroying worms but unfortunately, they leave the system after a few days and the pet can become re-infected, which is why it is important to have a routine in place to protect your best friend at all times.

Many worm medicines recommend a course of treatment every 3-6 months. However, frequency of worming depends on a number of factors such as the lifestyle, age and environment.

Puppy Schedule: When to Worm Puppies

  • check
Puppy worming starts from the age of 2 weeks then fortnightly until they reach 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months old, after that every 3-6 months will keep parasites at bay. The best puppy wormers are usually the same as for older breeds.
  • check
Working pups, who come into contact with birds and other animals those which like to scavenge, who spend a lot of time in or near water, live in households with young children, or live in areas where there is a higher risk of picking up certain types of parasites may need worming more frequently
  • check
For older breeds, ones suffering from a chronic illness or those taking other medications, it might be necessary to administer the minimum treatment possible

If you have any queries about , give your vet a call and discuss any worries. They will answer any questions and discuss the deworming tablets for your individual requirements.

How do De-wormers Work

When you give your dog a de-worming treatment it will work in one of three ways, the active ingredients in worming tablets will either cause kill the parasites or cause them to release their hold on the intestinal walls, so they can be passed when they go to the toilet, or ones which contain epsiprantel, praziquantel and fenbendazole literally dissolve the worms.

Ideally, they will also kill any eggs or larvae, but, not every de-wormer can do this in one dose, so you may need to repeat the treatment over the course of a few weeks before they are completely gone.

What if they spit them out?

You won’t believe this; but dogs can be quite sneaky when trying to give them medication. Make sure Fido has definitely swallowed it and not hidden it to be spat out when you’re not looking.

Some dogs may vomit after taking a tablet and in this case the pill may be brought back up. If this happens you may want to ask your vet’s advice about when to administer another dose.

Keep a close eye on your best pal for a day or two after he has been de-wormed as in rare cases, dogs can be allergic to worming products and if you are concerned or worried about anything, give your vet a call.

Possible Side Affects

Most dogs suffer no side effects after de-worming however it helps if you know what to expect.

Many pooches throw up after being wormed, this is nothing to worry about especially if they have a large infestation as the little blighters need to be expelled somehow. Although it can be worrying to spot worms in your dog’s vomit, it means the worming process is working.

However, if your pet is vomiting a lot and this continues it is advisable to seek your vet’s advice.

This is extremely common after worming and is perfectly normal. This is because the worms being eliminated from the intestinal tract causes inflammation which leads to poor Fido getting the runs.  This is nothing to worry about unless it lasts longer than 24-48 hours, just make sure he is drinking plenty.

Again, don’t worry if you see worms in their stools. If your pet has abdominal pain and seems to be straining it could be due to a heavy infestation, which can cause a blockage or a more severe case of gastro-enteritis, in this case see your vet immediately

Some worming options may result in your best friend feeling off colour for a day or two. Again, this is usually nothing to worry about and your pup should be back to his normal self pretty quickly. If you are worried or other symptoms occur, then check with your vet.

Loss of Appetite

With all that’s going on in your furry friend’s stomach; it is perfectly understandable that he may not want to eat until the tablets take their course and the worms are expelled. This should only last a short while.

What to do if they are poorly?

If your dog vomits after worming or has an upset tummy, it is a good idea to wait for 12 hours then feed bland food such as boiled chicken, white fish and rice for a day or so, until things get back to normal.

It may be disheartening to know worming your pet can make them unwell, even for a short time but the good news is:  After a couple of days you should see the benefits. Expect to see a new lease of life, your four-legged friend’s coat should improve, his appetite will return and any weight loss due to the worms will return. He will be full of beans, healthy and happy.
