Don't worry after you read this you will be a worm expert and know 100% what are the top brands, which dog tablets you should buy and more importantly which wormers stop different types of worms.

It can be daunting to know that your pride and joy might have worms and even more scary if you don't instantly know the right worming solution.

But really, worming treatment is common and simple enough using one of the few tablets below:

Which Dewormer Should I give?

There are a wide variety of dog deworming treatments on the market. Your vet can prescribe worming tablets, or you can buy them online or at pharmacies, pet shops and supermarkets.

Roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms are the most common doggy parasites in the UK and you can buy all-in-one de-wormer for your dog which effectively get rid of all three. Be sure to check the packet though to ensure it does cover them all

Be aware that 3-in-1 worming tablets, while an extremely convenient, only kill the parasites mentioned above and are not effective against lungworm or heartworm.

Always consult your vet for advice, as some over the counter medications are not suitable for heavy infestations or the de-worming of pregnant bitches and ensure you give the correct dosage.

It is advisable to use dog worming treatments 3 times a year although hunting and retrieving dogs should be de-wormed every month.

Spoiler! They all below this section.

Over the Counter

Don’t worry if online ordering is not your thing there are also plenty of places on the high-street which stock worming tablets for dogs. Of course, pet stores like Pets at Home, Jollyes, Pet’s Corner and Just for Pets stock dog de-wormers as do most independent pet-shops, although for some medicines you may still need a prescription.

Increasingly, these days, supermarkets like Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsburys also stock dog worming options, and you can find them on the shelves of high street stores like Boots and Superdrug along with local pharmacies. Even discount stores such as Home Bargains and B & M stock worming tablets, although these will probably be limited to Johnsons and Bob Martin wormers.

What Tablets do Asda stock?

Large Asda stores, like many of the big supermarkets, stock a huge range of worming products. Whilst some over the counter brands can be found on the shelves in the pet-aisle, others like Drontal tablets can only be obtained at the pharmacy.

This is because some brands belong within the animal medicines legal category; POM-VPS which means they can only be prescribed by a vet, pharmacist or suitably qualified person to ensure correct usage.

You can claim back on your insurance for prescription meds (worming and flea treatments are not covered by insurance)

Q: Can worming a dog cause vomiting?
A: Simple answer yes it can, its one of the common side affects.

Costs

Q: How much are worming tablets?
A: A cheap dewormer can start at around £5 and go up to as much as £15 for the better worming treatments

What Dosage

When administering worm tablets getting the dosage correct is vital, this will depend on the weight of your dog which can vary depending on age and amount of exercise it does daily, so don’t guess! Worming treatments can cause side effects so it essential to get it right.

Most worming products come in tablet form, they are often flavoured in an attempt to make them more palatable and some pooches will snaffle them up no problem. Alternatively, if Fido is not keen, you can mix them with dry food or hide them in or small chunk of cheese. Covering them with a coating of peanut butter or cream cheese can sometimes work too.

What dog wouldn't eat that!

If you have a dog that dislikes tablets and is hard to fool, you may have to place the tablet directly into the rear of his mouth and hold shut until he swallows it down.

Worming liquids, syrups, and pastes offer an alternative and are more easily administered whilst granules can be sprinkled directly into food.

Things to consider

Always read instructions carefully as some worm tablets need to be given whole, some on an empty stomach or a specific amount of food, some are a single dose and some need to be repeated.

Here's the kicker..

It might seem obvious, but it is vital when worming to ensure your pooch has swallowed all the de-wormer and doesn’t spit it out when you’re not looking; pets can be sneaky.

Note: Always use lungworm tablets that are manufactured specifically for dogs, some, such as equine worming pills can be extremely dangerous for our canine companions.

The best tablets for puppies and dogs are effective at destroying worms but unfortunately, they leave the system after a few days and the pet can become re-infected, which is why it is important to have a routine in place to protect your best friend at all times.

Many worm medicines recommend a course of treatment every 3-6 months. However, frequency of worming depends on a number of factors such as the lifestyle, age and environment.

Timelines

  • check
Puppy worming starts from the age of 2 weeks then fortnightly until they reach 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months old, after that every 3-6 months will keep parasites at bay. Worm  for puppies are usually the same as older breeds.
  • check
Working pups, who come into contact with birds and other animals those which like to scavenge, who spend a lot of time in or near water, live in households with young children, or live in areas where there is a higher risk of picking up certain types of parasites may need worming more frequently
  • check
For older breeds, ones suffering from a chronic illness or those taking other medications, it might be necessary to administer the minimum treatment possible

If you have any queries, give your vet a call and discuss any worries. They will answer any questions and discuss the deworming tablets for your individual requirements.

How does the Medicine Work?

When you give your dog a de-worming treatment it will work in one of three ways, the active ingredients in worming tablets will either cause kill the parasites or cause them to release their hold on the intestinal walls, so they can be passed when they go to the toilet, or ones which contain epsiprantel, praziquantel and fenbendazole literally dissolve the worms.

Ideally, they will also kill any eggs or larvae, but, not every de-wormer can do this in one dose, so you may need to repeat the treatment over the course of a few weeks before they are completely gone.

What if they spit them out?

You won’t believe this; but dogs can be quite sneaky when trying to give them medication. Make sure Fido has definitely swallowed it and not hidden it to be spat out when you’re not looking.

Some dogs may vomit after taking a tablet and in this case the pill may be brought back up. If this happens you may want to ask your vet’s advice about when to administer another dose.

Keep a close eye on your best pal for a day or two after he has been de-wormed as in rare cases, dogs can be allergic to worming products and if you are concerned or worried about anything, give your vet a call.

Possible Side Affects

Most dogs suffer no side effects after de-worming however it helps if you know what to expect.

Sickness

Many pooches throw up after being wormed, this is nothing to worry about especially if they have a large infestation as the little blighters need to be expelled somehow. Although it can be worrying to spot worms in your dog’s vomit, it means the worming process is working. However, if your pet is vomiting a lot and this continues it is advisable to seek your vet’s advice.

Diarrhoea

This is extremely common after worming and is perfectly normal. This is because the worms being eliminated from the intestinal tract causes inflammation which leads to poor Fido getting the runs.  This is nothing to worry about unless it lasts longer than 24-48 hours, just make sure he is drinking plenty.

Again, don’t worry if you see worms in their stools. If your pet has abdominal pain and seems to be straining it could be due to a heavy infestation, which can cause a blockage or a more severe case of gastro-enteritis, in this case see your vet immediately

Lethargy

Some worming options may result in your best friend feeling off colour for a day or two. Again, this is usually nothing to worry about and your pup should be back to his normal self pretty quickly. If you are worried or other symptoms occur, then check with your vet.

Loss of Appetite

With all that’s going on in your furry friend’s stomach; it is perfectly understandable that he may not want to eat until the tablets take their course and the worms are expelled. This should only last a short while.

What to do if your dog is sick?

If your dog vomits after worming or has an upset tummy, it is a good idea to wait for 12 hours then feed bland food such as boiled chicken, white fish and rice for a day or so, until things get back to normal.

Want to know the best part?

It may be disheartening to know worming your pet can make them unwell, even for a short time but the good news is:  After a couple of days you should see the benefits. Expect to see a new lease of life, your four-legged friend’s coat should improve, his appetite will return and any weight loss due to the worms will return. He will be full of beans, healthy and happy.

To learn how to treat dog worms without going to a VET here is a good guide for a dewormer home remedy

Worming Puppies

It is essential to worm puppies as parasites can cause serious issues in young dogs. Puppies can be born with worms which are contracted from their mothers’ intestine. Therefore, must be treated from an early age to prevent health problems such as

  • anaemia,
  • diarrhoea,
  • growth problems
  • respiratory issues.

Puppy wormers come in many types, so you have tons of options. Tablets, powders and worming granules are common, but you can also buy liquid worming treatments and your vet can prescribe injectable wormers. You will probably find the worming syrup or drops easier for really young puppies as they won’t have been weaned yet.

How it Works?

Like adult dogs, some puppy worming treatments dissolve the worms present, while others destroy them internally and they are then passed in the faeces. Others paralyze the worms which then fall away from the intestinal walls and are subsequently eliminated

It is important to follow the instructions when worming any dog and give the correct dosage for size, weight and age and this is especially true with when worming puppies. There are worm treatments for puppies, however it is always best to consult with your vet.
