The Best Artificial Grass for Dogs (UK) Plus is it Even Good for Them?

The interest in fake lawns right now is through the roof. Unless you enjoy gardening then the emergence of the synthetic turf that looks like real grass is obviously going to catch people’s attention. But what about artificial grass for dogs? Let’s find out!

  • Is it safe?
  • What about poo?
  • Is it easy to clean?
  • What’s the best?

Dogs Barn’s definitive guide will tell you everything you need to know about artificial grass and dogs.

Dogs love grass and a lush, green well-manicured lawn in the Summer is a beautiful sight, unfortunately for many dog owners it is almost impossible to keep it looking it’s best, especially during the winter months when the unpredictable British weather can wreak havoc. Yellow pee stains, bald and muddy patches, your dog can have a big impact on your lawn.

What was once a green oasis no longer such a pretty sight, can quickly become a barren wasteland. Not to mention the trail of muddy paw prints your four-legged friend leaves throughout the house when he comes back inside and the baths needed when he decides a roll in the mud might be fun.

Could artificial lawn for dogs be the solution? With its easy maintenance and aesthetic appeal, fake grass or AstroTurf is becoming increasingly popular not only for commercial use and sports surfaces but also residential gardens, dog runs, School playgrounds and Corporate events.

But is this synthetic marvel any good for pets and dogs in particular?

There are a number of questions dog owners ask when debating to replace a natural lawn with artificial turf.

  • Is artificial grass safe for pets?
  • How do you keep it clean?
  • How much will it cost?
  • Will my dog ruin it?

Let’s Get Some Answers!

Is Artificial Grass Dog-Friendly/Safe?

The good news is if you buy your dog friendly artificial grass from a reputable company then yes, it is. Your beloved pooch won’t notice the difference between fake grass or the real thing.

Artificial grass has been manufactured since the 1960s but in recent years has seen much improvement, with better designs and the use of higher quality non-toxic synthetic materials producing a product that is durable, hygienic, easy to clean. The modern versions look and feel remarkably similar to the real thing.

An increasing number of kennels and shelters now use dog-friendly artificial grass as it provides a safe and comfortable environment for any number of dogs to play and exercise without the wear and tear that is inevitable with regular turf. Battersea Dogs Home has recently installed fake grass for dogs in their outdoor runs at their Brands Hatch facility.

Will My Dog Like It?

They will love it! Modern artificial turf options are thick, soft and feel just like a natural lawn. Not only that, your dog or dogs can play every day of the year no matter the weather, and they can play rough. The best artificial grass for pets and dogs will stand up to even the largest and most boisterous dogs antics.

No more problems with rain or frost making the ground a muddy quagmire. No more baked hard, dry ground to lie on, on a hot summers day and no more curtailed play-time because the lawn needs mowing, fertilising or weed killer has been put down. Soft on paws, comfortable to relax on and clean, what’s not to love?

What About Mess?

Good quality artificial grass for pets has an inbuilt drainage system so if your dog goes to the toilet the urine should drain away easily, number 2s can be picked up and bagged as normal and with regular hose downs the fake lawn is much more hygienic than real turf.

Contaminated soil is one of the ways a dog can pick up worms so high-quality false grass for dogs will cut down the risk of that problem too. Pet-friendly artificial grass is stain resistant so there will be no discoloured patches proclaiming the area as your dog’s toilet.

How to Clean Artificial Lawns?

The wonderful thing about fake grass for dogs is the easy maintenance. The pile is maintained by regular brushing with a soft-medium bristled brush to ensure the fibres stay upright and the grass remains soft and bouncy for delicate paws.

Surface leaves and debris should be removed immediately to prevent the build-up of organic matter which can damage the drainage system. Picking up poop, swilling away any residue and cleaning are easily done.

If you have an area where your dog urinates more often can be cleaned effectively with white vinegar or baking soda.

A weekly hose down with tap water or mild detergent should be enough to keep your lawn looking great. You can also purchase specialised de-odourizers to keep it smelling fresh too. Most find that because the lawn holds very little natural smells the majority of house-trained dogs wait till they go for a walk to do their business.

Where Can I Buy Dog Friendly Grass?

It is important when purchasing dog-friendly fake grass, to buy from an established reputable company, Many DIY and bargain stores sell imported grass which comes from the far-east. This grass is not of the same high quality and could be destroyed by the heavy wear and tear of larger dogs and could also contain chemicals that could potentially be harmful to your pet.

This is one product where scrimping is not cost-effective. The reduced costs of maintaining a fully manicured lawn mean purchasing artificial turf can be a real money saver in the long run so it is worth investing in quality.

Fake Turf Cost?

Like carpets you can pay anything from £5-£50 a square metre for artificial turf for pets. The choice can be mind-boggling but most reputable companies are happy to discuss your requirements and will be able to offer a dog-friendly product that complements both your needs and budget.

In the case of fake grass, you really do get what you pay for and with most companies offering long-term guarantees it can work out more cost-effective in the long run to pay a little extra for the best you can afford.

If you have a small area to cover offcuts may be a cheaper option. Professional installation adds to the cost but unless you are confident in your abilities it really is best to have your artificial lawn laid by an expert.

What is the Best Synthetic Turf for Dogs?

There are so many options available, different thicknesses, lengths, sand infills, luxury grasses. The choice can be confusing. Most companies are happy to discuss what products would suit your lifestyle and family. The best option for artificial grass if you have dogs is a hard-wearing, durable turf with good drainage.

Shorter pile is best as some dogs don’t like the sensation of the fibres between their paws. Most companies have a range of pet-friendly options and testimonials from other satisfied dog owners. It’s worth doing a little bit of research before you buy.

Their artificial grass range and installation system for pet owners last up to 20 years even with heavy use. British made and covered by a 10-year guarantee Easigrass have supplied councils, universities, and schools throughout the UK and abroad.

We asked Easigrass about the benefits of their artificial turf for dogs, and their owner Anthony Gallagher replied personally. This is what he had this to say:

Anthony Gallagher MD | Easigrass Distribution Ltd

“For the last ten years, Easigrass have been supplying and installing artificial gardens to dog lovers all over the UK.

Ideal for running, it makes a perfect play surface for dogs as well as children.
During both the summer and winter months, you may well find your dog(s) running and using the grass as a training area, with its great grip enabling them to use all of their agility sets and skills and even spinning onto their backs to have a gentle rub (massage) at the end of their sessions.

We have even noticed that they love to clean around their mouths by sliding their jaws along the grass. We call it “grassy flossing” in our house.

A few pointers to be made aware of are:

If you want the back garden to be a dog toilet, then you must be prepared to flush, clean and disinfect as you would with your own toilet.

Whilst Easigrass is completely odourless when installed, you may have a dog that has very strong-smelling urine, which can cause an odour to be left within the grass.

During the winter months with its increased rainfall, this is not a worry as the grass is naturally being washed through, however, you may encounter a build-up of smells during the dry summer months.

As a general rule, bitch’s urine has been encountered to be stronger than males but a Weimaraner bitch was the worst we had ever experienced. However, with an intensive clean and some new rules put in place, this is no longer a problem for that owner.

We have had occasions where some dogs have decided to lift and tear the grass. This is extremely rare as most dogs don’t like getting the silica sand (the last piece of our installation process) in their mouths. In this situation where damage was incurred, it was a disciplinary matter that was addressed.

To minimise a build-up of odour a simple thing like training the dog (via a treat) to pee in one corner so that it can easily be cleaned, is a perfect solution.

We are however one of the only companies in the UK that offer a full professional annual maintenance package that includes an intensive wash and anti-bacterial shampoo as part of the service. This will ensure that we get rid of most of the smells which can massively improve a garden with a heavy odour build-up.

For my sins, I have a little “Jack Russell” who flies around the garden and does his business occasionally here and there, when I haven’t had time to take him for a long walk, and I have never encountered an odour issue ……I am sure everyone has their own story.

The one thing that my better half loves is that there is “not one muddy paw print” ever on our kitchen floor from the dog. That’s why she loves her EASIGRASS….(and the fact that I own the company too )”

Kind Regards
Anthony J Gallagher

As of August 2017 this company is now called Buzzgrass

They provide a detailed guide to DIY installation on the website or can put you in touch with a local recommended landscaper to do the job.

We spoke to the company who told us:

Lucy GrahamMarketing Manager | SIS Pitches

“We’ve had a discussion here and essentially we haven’t ever really had many issues brought to our attention by dog owners, more often than not, they are delighted (as you will see in our before/after gallery and testimonials sections)

We have heard of puppies chewing corners if they aren’t fixed down properly, but they don’t carry on doing this – it seems to be a one off.

My colleague has some down in her dog’s kennel and he loves it, tried to chew it maybe once but then no problem (probably wasn’t tasty or satisfying!).

Dogs seem to be very happy to wee and poo on the grass and we’ve not heard of owners having trouble picking it up.

We recommend that you wash the grass down regularly and use a mild detergent every so often to ensure there is no residue and that it is a hygienic space, and this seems to work for our customers.

Our grass doesn’t need an infill, but perhaps there are more issues if there is a sand infill?”

How to lay artificial turf

Firstly, you need to remove the existing grass and level off the area. spread a layer 35mm thick of sharp builder’s sand as a base for the artificial turf then use a plank and a hammer to compact and level the sand. Roll out a strong weed membrane making sure it overlaps at any joints by at least 250mm you are then ready to lay your new turf.

Artificial grass lays at an angle so you should always lay it with the pile facing the house that way when you are viewing your lawn from indoors it will have a natural look.

Roll out too cover the area and stagger the edges so they don’t stop in a straight line. It is important to make sure all the grass is laid in the same direction and there are no stray blades caught between the joins.

Once you are happy fix the rolls together with the jointing tape and special adhesive making sure you ruffle the grass too hide the joints.

Most suppliers of artificial turf offer a fitting service which is advisable if you want a perfect looking lawn.

Indoor turf for dogs

Dog owners are now using indoor turf as an alternative to puppy pads. While it may make the puppy more likely to pee on the grass outside it is no alternative to traditional house-breaking. A bone of contention, I wouldn’t want my pooch peeing in the house if it was avoidable and having grass indoors would surely encourage it

Can children play on the turf

Yes, it is Ok for children to play on artificial grass although you may want to check before you buy that the lawn is tough enough for pets and children as there are lots of different styles. Also if your dog is using the artificial grass as a toilet it is important to make sure it is hygienic with regular cleaning.

How long do they last?

Artificial grass comes with warranties ranging from 8-20 years but it really depends on a lot of factors, what quality it is, traffic, etc. The key is to always choose the best quality you can afford.

Artificial turf drainage

Although artificial grass is porous and rain does drain through it. However, how well depends on the ground in your garden. Reputable companies will discuss your drainage needs before installing the lawn as the last thing you need is puddles of water or dog pee on your expensive lawn.
