Whether it’s the single bar jump, the weave poles or the classic dog tunnel, larger dogs can often show medium-sized dogs and pups how to cover an obstacle course in style. Here are a few of the best dog breeds built for agility training.

Standard Poodles

Poodles are brilliant dogs and are quick learners. They are strong, fast, and very elegant. They are focused on their owners are keen competitors. They are also very independent and good at adapting to various situations and locations.

Border Collies

Border Collies have proven to be the most successful dogs in dog agility competitions over the years. Initially bred to be working dogs, these canines use their incredible speed, intelligence, loyalty, and energy, to be the most efficient participants in dog agility competitions worldwide.

Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers are very intelligent, loyal, and friendly, making them very easy to train for new and experienced dog owners. They are strong, fast, and very high energy. They are also very focused dogs and can keep their eye on the owner at all times.

German Shepherds

They are extremely loyal dogs and are great at focusing on one person when surrounded by uncontrollable noise and distractions. That’s why they are ideal for dog agility courses.

Dobermans are yet another dog breed that are commonly used as working dogs, specifically as guard dogs. They are powerful and loyal. They are not always great at being social as they are very protective of their owners, but that does make them great at taking orders and listening to commands.

Australian Shepherds

Much like Border Collies, Australian Shepherds have been bred as working dogs on farms for centuries. They are very energetic, intelligent, and incredibly fast! They are very loyal to their owners and focused on the tasks at hand, all of which makes them ideal for dog agility.

Hungarian Vizslas

These dogs are particularly eager to please and enjoy spending time training with their owner. They will happily spend hours training on an agility course and can do exceptionally well! They are robust, fast, and intelligent. They are very enthusiastic and social, so they do well in competitions.

Dalmatians can be particularly tall dogs with powerful legs and muscles. They can go very fast and learn best through repetition and lots of practice! With a patient and dedicated owner, they can succeed very well at dog agility.

Much like Golden Retrievers, Labradors are very loyal and focused on their owners. They are also strong and fast dogs and are eager to please. During competitions, Labradors are very social and are therefore rarely phased by the surrounding noises and distractions.

German Short Haired Pointers

German Shorthaired Pointers are known for being excellent family dogs as they are very loyal and big gentle softies! They are eager to please and will listen to their trainers intently. Their strong muscles make them very fast and energetic, ideal for dog agility courses.

What Age Can Big Dogs start Agility Training?

Puppies should not start agility training unless they are at least 15 to 18 months old, especially big dogs, so there is no need to rush out to the dog agility shop when you get a new puppy; teaching them basic obedience is essential before contemplating agility.

Big dogs are prone to having more joint problems and arthritis than smaller dogs due to their bones and joints being put under more severe stress at a young age. They take longer to develop, and their fragile joints can be easily damaged, even permanently, if the utmost care is not taken from the start.

Agility training can be very intense physical work, even on the easiest of obstacles. To ensure your dog’s well-being, always check with your vet before starting your puppy in agility training

Training your Pup in Dog Agility

Training your pup to conquer any obstacle will take time. However, they tend to love it once they get the hang of it and feel its benefits both physically and mentally. Take it slow; 5-10 minute sessions are enough to start and always make sure adjustable jumps are at their lowest level.

Remember, bigger dogs will find tight turns difficult at first and may not like the tunnel, especially if it’s too small, so always consider an affordable agility obstacle course that can be easily moved and adjustable.

Your pup will need to understand basic commands and if you are going to a training class, they need to be well socialised as much of the work is done off-leash.

Weaving Poles

Dog agility poles, also known as weave poles, should be 60cm apart, at the very least. They are 60cm apart in competitions as standard, so the earlier you start your dog on these, the better!

It is important for your dog to zigzag between the PVC pipes, and you can lure them in and out of the bars with a treat or a toy. Have your dog follow you first, then gradually get them to do it on their own.

When starting to train your dog in the tunnel, you may some help from a friend! Ask someone else to hold your dog on a lead and guide them through one end of the tunnel.

Then, you go to the other end and call them with a treat or a toy. Be sure to call them with enthusiasm and comfort them if they are scared. Start with a tunnel in a straight line so that your dog can easily spot you down the other end.

A staple of any good dog agility training set. The height of the hurdle jumps depends on the size of the dog.  The hurdles should be at 60cm for large dogs and should be at a width of 1. 2m minimum.

Start your dog off at a lower height and gradually increase it as they get used to the obstacle. It is easy to call them over to you, but try luring them with a treat or a toy for the more stubborn pooches.

Pause Box

This box should be 60 cm in height and big enough for them to sit comfortably in it!

This is one of the easiest obstacles in your dog agility training set, as all they need to do is learn how to jump on it and stay seated when told to. Easier said than done in all the excitement of the course. Lure them onto it with a treat or a toy, and be sure to teach them to sit and stay, increasing the time slowly.

The dog agility seesaw should be covered with a non-slip surface or flat paint for your dog’s safety. The height of the seesaw depends on your preference.

Training your dog to use it will take time, treats, toys, and patience! We recommend starting your dog on the seesaw by walking, not running, as they could very easily lose their balance and fall, hurting themselves.

Large Dogs Competing in Agility

Large dog breeds do very well in dog shows. Border Collies specifically tend to be the ones to bet on as they are the most successful breed ever in this sport!

That being said, even slower, heavier dogs can do very well at agility training without competing.

Speed, strength, and intelligence are the main things that the jury will be looking for, but many large dogs can reap the benefits without being a champion and are happy doing the course at a leisurely pace at home.

Just make sure you invest in the best dog agility equipment sets to get them on the right track.

Can Rottweilers do agility?

Rottweilers can indeed do agility training, and are in fact, ideal for it. They are brilliant learners and are naturally very agile and sporty dogs. They have strong muscles and are quick enough to make it around an agility course in good time. They are also very loyal and eager to please their owners.

Are big dogs good at agility?

Larger dogs can be very good at agility training. In fact, big dogs such as Border Collies are among the best dog agility stars at competitions.

Can I train my dog over obstacles at home?

Yes, you can train your dog to go over obstacles at home via your own dog agility equipment. Most professionals would recommend that you start your pup on agility training from your home. There is plenty of low-cost dog agility equipment that can be found online or in any pet store; you can even make your own with a few PVC pipes, and it is a great way to bond with and exercise your dog.

Is Agility safe for big dogs?

In most cases, agility training is safe for big dogs. It provides good mental and physical stimulation for them. Many vets and professionals recommend dog agility kits for big dogs to help them exercise and use their minds. That being said, you should always check with your vet before starting dog agility with your pup, in case their breed, size, age, and/or health should not permit it.

There is no better obedience training for large dogs – the best dog agility equipment will help your pup both mentally and physically. Any seasoned dog owner will tell you that training your dog can be a lot of fun – you just need the best agility equipment for dogs to help you along.

Dog agility and dog training items are easy to come across online (or via a specialist dog agility shop), but many of us worry about the price for an entire set. Thankfully, an affordable agility kit is easy to find online and can be added to over the years.

You can start to train your potential show dogs on jumping bars, the tire jump, a painted pause box, and agility equipment that dogs can use. That will a great starting point for both you and your pup!

Wait till your dog completes the obstacle course well before moving up in equipment, classes, and then maybe you will be able to meet competition guidelines and have your dog fit for shows!

Above all, look for agility training staples such as adjustable jumps, a weave pole set, a hoop jump or two and a walkway – and a handy carrying bag really won’t hurt, either. Consider easy storage and high-quality plastic – not just the right bits and pieces of dog agility equipment.

The MelkTemn Dog Agility Set is our favorite here – it’s the perfect dog training jump, ideal for any dog owners with larger agility dogs looking to progress to competition level.
